Millennials joining the Rving Community
Posted by on
For years experts, have suggested Millennials would become a significate group in the RVing community. Is 2016 the year that has predication has become reality?
Well, preliminary indications suggest that it is. Ownership of recreational vehicles by individuals born after 1980 has risen sharply and the industry expects that to continue into 2017 and beyond. What is driving this trend?
Surveys from a variety of sources suggest there are several reasons. Obviously, interest and willingness to engage in camping is at the top of the list. When asked “why camping” .…96% of the respondents in one survey said “the outdoors.” Camping is one of those activities that is either loved or hated; there is no middle ground. Happy campers typically have fond memories of family outings that carry over.
In another survey 87% of the millennials indicated camping was related to the pursuit of a hobby or a sport. As might be expected fishing, mountain biking and photography are most popular, but activities such as trail running, rock climbing and kayaking ranked high.
Interestingly, paddle boarding appears to be the hottest new trend. While the old standbys… campfires and outdoor cooking are still cherished.
So why is this new demographic showing up in 2016?
Some suggest the “perfect financial storm.” Growth of disposable income, low interest rates and gas prices make ownership attractive. Additionally, the RV industry has done a good job creating demand through innovative new designs.
Smaller lighter RV’s, both towable and motorized, have come onto the market. Whether it is cutting-edge or a cool retro style, they dovetail nicely with the “lifestyle” concept. These next-gen RV’s offering solar panels, LED lighting and onboard technology as standard equipment are in demand.
I’m far from a millennial, but I am intrigued by this new trend, perhaps less is more.
