Re:
Coil n' Wrap® Wind Fence
I
purchased the Wind Fence last year at an RV show
in Sacramento. My intention was to use the fences
for when my family and I go camping in the dunes
to ride our quads. We used the fences for the first
time in Nevada in May and were really surprised
at how well they worked. These fence units came
within their own carrying bag which makes them easy
to handle. They were very easy to assemble by reading
the simple directions. We were impressed with the
see through material which allowed you to still
enjoy the surrounding scenery, while being protected
from the elements. We had two sections next
to the camp fire, which allowed many families to
sit around the camp fire in the evenings and enjoy
being outdoors. The wind throughout the weekend
was variable at 25 to 30 mph. All of the
people that used it were able to sit and eat or
talk and relax while being behind the fence. This
felt as if the wind did not exist.
Our
next chance to use the fences came at Thanksgiving
week at Dumont Dunes. We set up our two sections
of fences on the first day. They got a lot of use
throughout the whole week by many of the 12 families
that were with our group. Again, everyone was totally
amazed at how much difference it made to be behind
the fences while the wind gusted. All week the wind
blew extremely strong. We left them
standing to see what they could handle. According
to my Sherpa Wind Meter they did perfectly well
at wind speeds of 40 to 60 mph.
This was a very windy week in the desert. The
fences made a huge difference. If it were not for
the fences we could not have gone outside.
The fences provided us shelter from the amazingly
strong winds. During the times that you could go
outside, you could at least be comfortable behind
the fences.
The
attached photos show how the wind velocity was changed
from above the fence to below.
We
were so impressed with this product that we ordered
two more sections so we can have more protected
area for our families around our camp fires in the
future.
Sincerely,
Ron DeLaney

Hi:
We put your wind fence to the test this weekend in Chicago. The tournament was staged at an old landfill on top of a hill and the weather was cold and windy with an occasional shower of mixed rain and snow. I am a reasonably experienced weather observer and I would put the steady state winds in the low 20 knot range with much higher gusts. It was blowing pretty hard but not completely off the charts.
The tournament games went from 9 to 5 on Saturday so it was a long day. The good news is that the fence works great. We could not have stayed out there without it. All the other teams had to retreat to their cars. All the canopies blew down but one and without the fencing they were of no use anyway. The bad news is that when set up according to the instructions the fence would not stand up to the winds. We broke one coupling and had issues with the fence blowing over when the re-rod was only in the ground far enough to extend above the coupling. Luckily, I anticipated some of this and had extra tent stakes and some rope to secure the fence. There was a Home Depot nearby so we made a run over there and got some longer pieces of rerod and some ½” Bolt rod to replace the short re-rod along with some 10” Eye Bolts to use as tent stakes. Once we reinforced everything we were all set.
We are using the fence at another Lacrosse event this weekend and my new plan is to get some pieces of epoxy coated rerod cut to 5’ and sharpen one end. I am also replacing all of the PVC with 5’ pieces to eliminate the couplings. I am an electrical contractor anyway so getting the parts and fabbing them up are no big deal. I know why you are using the short pieces but I don’t have any storage/transportation issues so I am going for the stouter solution. We used ty-raps instead of the hook & loop for the same reason. I had them and they were easy to use.
Not to repeat myself too much but the fabric itself worked great. The conditions were pretty brutal and some of the kids were able to stay outside the whole time. You will see in the photos that one garbage bag is blowing out like a parachute and the one behind the fence is just laying there. It really works.
As far as marketing the product, I can tell you that there are youth sports tournaments all over the U.S. every weekend of the spring, summer and fall. Most teams have some sort of setup for their kids and parents. During the summer, it is heat and rain that are the issues. Spring and fall it’s wind and rain/snow. You definitely have a solution for the wind. If you can fine tune the engineering a bit, I think you definitely have a product you can sell to these parents. Market a super stout canopy and you would have the complete solution.
We also have a house on the beach on northern Lake Michigan. I can definitely see a use for hanging out on the beach on windy days. Both to stay warm and to be able to read the paper without it blowing away. I will let you know how that works out.
I attached a couple pictures and the cd is in the mail with some more. If you have any comments or ideas please let me know.
Thanks,
Roy Martin
