We have become programmed over time to automatically expect each step to be 8" apart. When that changes it becomes very easy to stumble. Using an outside step stool doesn't alleviate that problem because we still have a difference in the proper stepping distance most of the time. Also an exterior platform or step can be wobbly or uneven because of the ground surface not being flat.
