RV Handyman Newsletter Reviews LightCheck

The LightCheck and Safety Plug is a unique tool for owners of 5th wheels and trailers to test the lights on their units WITHOUT being plugged into their tow vehicle. It allows you to check the lights by yourself in advance of a trip to make sure all the systems are working so there are no surprises when you're ready to hit the road. The handy "Trouble Shooting " instructions on the unit identify problems and solutions to electrical problems, including identifying a bad ground. This can save you time and money and perhaps an expensive, time-consuming trip to a repair facility.
A few months ago I talked to Bob Livingston at Highways Magazine and told him about the LightCheck & Safety Plug. He asked me to send some to him so they could send them out to "testers" to see how well they worked. Testers are volunteers who test products and report back how well they worked. We sent him six of the LightChecks and they sent them out to their testers. They were reviewed in a recent copy of the RV Handyman Newsletter. Here are the comments from the six testers.
"Does it do all the manufacturer claims? We asked our Product Testers to report"
NORMAN LAVALLEE, MEMBER #2433: Rated it "Good" for instructions, ease of use, quality, convenience and usefulness, and "Excellent" for uniqueness. "The only problem with this product was the packaging in shipping. Received with a broken yellow/orange lens." Would purchase it himself and recommend to a friend. (This problem has since been corrected)
MARY G. HOSEY, MEMBER #3744: Rated it "Excellent" all around: instructions, ease of use, quality, convenience, usefulness and uniqueness. "Saves time instead of hooking up tow vehicle to check lights. All light functions can be checked at once." Would recommend to a friend as well as purchase herself.
KEN KLEIBER, MEMBER #2719: Rated "Excellent" for instructions, ease of use, quality, convenience, "Poor" for usefulness, and "Good" for uniqueness. "The product works as stated. My problems with trailer lights have been at the plug in the tow vehicle. Therefore, I always check the lights after hooking up. The ability to use the unit as a safety feature is interesting, but I cannot foresee abandoning my trailer when I have towing insurance." Would not buy or recommend to a friend.
JOHN ADAMS, MEMBER #1453: Rated it "Excellent" all around: instructions, ease of use, quality, convenience, usefulness, and uniqueness. "It is a very useful product," wrote Mr. Adams. He would purchase as well as recommend it to a friend.
STAN SPILOVE, MEMBER #3174: Rated it "Excellent" all around: instructions, ease of use, quality, convenience, usefulness, and uniqueness. "An easy way to check all the lights on the trailer. Easy to plug in and test the systems." He would purchase as well as recommend it to a friend.
JAMES BAMANN, MEMBER #1745: Rated it "Excellent" all around: instructions, ease of use, quality, conveniences, usefulness, and uniqueness. Considers it a valuable product for other RVers and would purchase it himself as well as recommend to a friend.
This month we are going to put the LightCheck & Safety Plug on sale at a 20% discount. It is a great product and fabulous gift idea for your RVing friend.

PLUG DOGS on 30 Amp Extension Cords
PLUG DOGS are straps that attach to the electrical ends of cords, surge protectors, auto formers and extension cords to make it easy to unplug them from an electrical outlet or from each other. This is one of the most popular products we have ever had.
They come in 50 Amp (blue) and 30 Amp (red) configurations with the holes pre-cut into the material. They have hook & loop closures to secure them to your plug. They are non-wicking and non-conductive and will not interfere with the electrical connection. They will extend the life of your plugs dramatically and will eliminate the need for a screwdriver to seperate the two 50 amp plugs. The guys call them blood pressure reducers. The ladies call them language improvers.
Sometimes the 30 Amp PLUG DOG on the female end of the plug doesn't want to stay attached and will fall off. I never had a problem with this on my plug adapter but due to the design of the plug on my 30 Amp extension cord it wouldn't stay on. To solve this problem, I plugged the extension cord into my plug adapter in order to hold the PLUG DOG in the proper position. Then I released the hook & loop straps off the back of the plug and put some Gorilla Glue on the back of the plug head. If you use Gorilla Glue you must first wet the surface for it to work. I then resecured the straps and haven't had a problem since.

SkyMed Offers $300 Gas Card
Over the years we have travelled in our RV we have come across the SkyMed booth at various shows and signed up for this valuable service. We are now offering this service to our readers. It will NOT be available at the rallies as we are just too busy. I have determined that it is a product that is in high demand and is really a "must have for most people."
SkyMed is NOT travel insurance and will not pay for local hospitilization. SkyMed is an evacuation and repatriations service. Repatriation is significant because "SkyMed takes you home" when you need to be transported after suffering medical emergencies while traveling more than 100 air miles from home.
NO QUESTIONS, NO CLAIM FORMS, NO CONCERN ABOUT PRE-EXISTING CONDITONS!
SkyMed will return you, your spouse, your pets, and your grandchildren, if they are with you, and your rig back to your home. This returns you to your local hospital and medical care providers. While other plans may leave you stranded at a distant location, SkyMed returns the member, spouse or companion, their children and/or grandchildren, stranded vehicles and pets -- to the only place that really matters...home. Does your plan take you home? Check the fine print? MASA and MEDEX do not meet this definition. They take you to the closest hospital that can provide the medical service, potentially leaving you stranded from where you need to be. "SkyMed takes you home." Home to your doctors, hospitals and professionals. They will also fly in a family member to be with you if necessary.
Another benefit is once you have SkyMed, they can never cancel you! As long as you pay the premiums they will keep you covered. No worry about health changes and having your coverage terminated.
Effective immediately there is a huge bonus!
For those who subscribe to an annual plan, SkyMed is offering a FREE $300 gas card. At today's fuel costs saving $300 is HUGE. This discounts the cost of the plan enormously! If you take out a 3 year of 5 year plan the gas card is worth $500. You can call me, Ken Wilton, for further details and answers to your questions at 866-603-8388 or visit www.skymed.com/kenwilton. There are significant discounts for members of Good Sam, FMCA, RV Clubs and many others. Please contact me to find out if you qualify for these discounts. The discounts DON'T show up on the website.
This is an important plan for Canadians as well. A lot of people think that travel insurance will cover all of their needs. (The Gas Card also works in Canada) Unfortunately the medical underwriting is done by the insurance companies at the time of the claim. Both my father and mother-in-law had their claims denied by their Canadian insurers after the claim was filed. Also, when a Canadian travels from one province to the other, they are NOT covered for ambulance or evacuation costs. If you are visiting another province and have to be evacuated by a plane or helicopter the costs can be enormous and have to be paid by you the patient. SkyMed will cover all of these costs whether you are in Canada, Mexico, Central America or any of 32 countries. Cuba is one of the exceptions.
Please give us a call to discuss your needs in detail at 866-603-8388.
